AHPO's work

The Work of AHPO

There is very considerable overlap in the work of different professionals in the ophthalmic sector but all professions share the common goal of providing the best possible care to patients with the available resources. The work of AHPO focuses on areas of interprofessional practice, seeking agreement on common standards of practice and the knowledge and skills required to achieve them. Where appropriate we seek to develop shared programmes of education and training, both at undergraduate level and for continuing professional development.

AHPO has now completed the following projects:

  • Members of AHPO have worked with the Healthcare Science Project to write 16 Ophthalmic and Vision Science National Occupational Standards.
  • AHPO has developed the Foundation Degree in Ophthalmic Science and Technology that is being offered by New College Nottingham and is validated by Nottingham Trent University and City of Westminster College, London.
  • AHPO offers an Annual Continuing Education Programme of lectures and workshops in ophthalmic knowledge and skills.
  • AHPO can accredit Continuing Education programmes, ensuring that course providers state clear learning outcomes, that course instructors are suitably qualified and the quality of courses is assessed by attendees.
